The world’s gone asleep: now we are alone,
And, if I may, with gentle hand, write rhyme
Worthy of beauty which lives for all Time.
Lunar lady, for you my heart still moans,
For the slow flattery of a monthly wink,
The softening glow that gilds sleeping clouds,
And covers the vast night with dreamy shrouds,
So it may rest when Day is at the brink.
Yet for this, my heart is unsatisfied,
With the light touches of a dull romance,
Borne from the thoughts of a love that has died.
Ere my days expire, will I get the chance
To write poesy, and know I have not lied,
About flirting spheres in celestial dance?
