Sonnet to Earth

--

Poem written in response to our climate crisis

“Earthrise” taken on December 24, 1968, by Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders.

Our living song invites a dying dance

Performed with pain, and leaves as Life began.

’Twas here we once did play without a chance

To lose to Death and win the fall of Man.

Now Earth, in woe to see her Reason go,

Though vengeful that cruel mammals treat her so,

Spills countless tears to swell the brimming blue,

And scorches land to dearth in solar rue.

She the lively coast will bury under sea,

And woodland dry will quench the field with flames,

As weak and poor, to please the powers that be,

Must buy into the Corporation’s games.

Man’s recital to win more time must end,

For e’en suns are snuffed by Extinction’s trend.
